Profile Hiroko Sato - Pijanowski Galleries

Hiroko, born in Tokyo Japan, received her MFA in 1966 from the Cranbrook Academy of Art, in Michigan U.S.A.. She began teaching Metalsmithing in 1986 at The University of Michigan, and continued until 2001 when she retired as Professor Emeritus. Her work has been in over 300 national and international exhibitions, and over 200 books, magazines, and catalogues. Her work is in collections throughout the world including; The Danner Collection in Munchen, Germany, The Art Gallery of Western Australia in Perth, Australia, Nordenfjeldske Kunst Industriemuseum in Trondheim, Norway, The Museum of Arts and Design, in New York, The Gallery of Western Art, Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., The Vienna Craft Museum in Vienna, Austria, and The National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, Japan.

She was the recipient of the 1987 Herbert Hofmann Prize "Schumickgene Handwertesuesse", she received First Place in the 2000 American Vision Jewelry Competition as well as the Smithsonian High Tec Award, from the Smithsonian Museum. She is the recipient of three NEA Grants, a Fellow of the American Craft Council, and a member of The Japan Foundation Long Term Fellowship Program. Hiroko has also has given over 180 workshops and lectures, throughout the United States, Canada, UK, Holland, Japan, and Australia.

She devoted herself to the spreading an ancient Japanese metalworking technique “Mokume-Gane" on the verge of extinction throughout world by giving lectures and workshops. Her achievements for thirty years resulted to be held International Conference of Mokume-Gane at 2002 in Melbourne, Australia. The last research was to design metalworking and jewelry using Cad, Cam. This research paper, titled “Looking to the Future―Digital Technologies for Jewelry and Metalwork" was presented for S.N.A.G. Conference at St. Louis, U.S.A. in 1999.

Hiroko has also co-authored 15 articles in the united States, Japan and Korean magazines, she produced a technical film and video as well as published reports and essays on her work and philosophy.

Hiroko had an interview from Smithsonian Institute at Washington DC for Archives of American Art in 2003. Since then her name is included in American Art History.
